Birth and early life
Rekha Gupta was born on 19 July 1974 in Nandgarh village of Julana town in Jind district of Haryana. Her grandfather Rajendra Jindal was a trader in Julana, father Jai Bhagwan Jindal was a manager in Bank of India and mother Urmila is a housewife. After the transfer of father in 1976, the whole family moved to Pitampura area of Delhi. Rekha’s family members still live in Nandgarh and do business in the grain market of Julana.
Education
Rekha Gupta did her schooling from Tri Nagar, Delhi. She received a B.Com degree from Daulatram College. For further studies, she did LLB from IMIRC College of Law, Ghaziabad, affiliated to Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. Along with education, her interest in politics also increased.
Family
Rekha Gupta married Manish Gupta in 1998, whose family has settled in Delhi from Badh town of Charkhi Dadri. They have a daughter Harshita, who is in Australia and helps her father in business, and a son Nikunj, who is pursuing education.
Political journey
Rekha Gupta started politics in 1992 with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Daulatram College of Delhi University. She was the secretary of Delhi University Students Union in 1995-96 and became president in 1996-97. In 2002, she joined BJP and was the national secretary of the party’s youth wing. In 2007, she was elected councillor from North Pitampura, became a national executive member of BJP in 2010 and also became BJP’s candidate for the post of Mayor of MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) in 2022.
Journey to become Chief Minister
In 2015 and 2020, she contested from Sali Mar Bagh seat in the assembly elections but had to face defeat. BJP kept faith in her and registered a big victory on Sali Mar Bagh seat in 2025. After becoming an MLA, she directly got the chair of Chief Minister of Delhi.
Proud achievements
Rekha Gupta is the third Chief Minister of Delhi who hails from Haryana. Earlier, Sushma Swaraj (Ambala) took over as Chief Minister of Delhi in October 1998 and Arvind Kejriwal (Bhiwani) in 2013.
